General Kershaw rubbed his stubbled jaw and said, “I’d like to let you go, Major, but this lull isn’t going to last. The Yankees could attack at any minute.”

“But, sir,” argued Layne Dalton, “from what the sergeant said, my wife could be dying. Put yourself in my place. If it was your wife down there, wouldn’t you want to go, no matter what?”

Kershaw nervously pulled at an ear. “Of course I would,” he said. “But there are two reasons I’m hesitating. Number one, if the blue-bellies attack while you’re en route, you could get killed real quick. Number two, I need you here to lead your men when the battle comes.”

“Look at it this way, sir. What would you do if I went down in the midst of battle? You’d replace me with another officer, right?”

“Yes.”

“Well, if the Federals launch their attack while I’m gone, put that man in my place. I’ll get back here as soon as I can. As for the situation en route … I’ll make sure I don’t run into the enemy. Please, sir.”

Kershaw sighed. “You drive a hard bargain, Major.”

“I try, sir.”

The general sighed again. “You’re a good man, and this army needs you. Just be real careful, okay?”

A tight smile curved Dalton’s lips. “Thank you, sir. I will.”
